  System.setProperty("webdriver.gecko.driver", "C://Selenium driver/geckodriver.exe");
 DesiredCapabilities capabilities = DesiredCapabilities.firefox();
 capabilities.setCapability("marionette", true);
  driver= new FirefoxDriver();
 }
@AfterTest
    public void tearDown() {
        driver.close();
    }
 @Test
    public void testExamples() {
     WebElement TextElem = driver.findElement(By.id("multiplewindow"));
    TextElem.click();
    driver.switchTo().alert();
    String Text = driver.findElement(By.id("popuptext")).getText();
    Assert.assertEquals(Text, "Text within the pop up window");

Your Pop-up alert is not a browser alert. Its customized HTML alert. In that case you do not have to do driver.switchTo().alert();

You use switchTo().alert() where there is an alert by the browser.

Make sure that your alert is not inside the iframe. If its inside the iframe, you will have to use driver.switchTo().frame("frame id")

Hope that helps!
