Modern Test or Old Tester, I would always look for a person with good domain knowledge and experience in the same domain. Because a Tester should always be aware of product functionality and should have similar knowledge as of business analyst. If the test has the knowledge about the domain, he can easily point out if the product he is the dev team is releasing is usable or not. He can define quality criteria and lead the development process.
Apart from the domain knowledge, obviously test automation knowledge is very important as well. Automation in modern world saves lots of time. It will help reduce the release lifecycle.
So, I will bet on a test with great domain knowledge and automation skills.
